Cosmetics Cluster UK September 2022 Newsletter

The breaking news on the evening of Thursday 8th September 2022, of our dear Queen's passing, has deeply affected many. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II touched the lives of so many and was the embodiment of kindness, humility, selflessness and unity. We join the rest of the nation in mourning the loss of our monarch, who served us all with such dignity and warmth for more than seventy years. We also extend our best wishes to the new King Charles III as he begins his reign.

Cosmetics Cluster UK delayed our first e-newsletter after the summer break last week as a sign of respect. The last quarter of 2022 brings many exciting activities and we extend a warm invite to participate in our packed autumn schedule.

We were looking forward to kicking off September with a joint webinar with China Beautéville on September 15, however CCUK have taken the decision to postpone the webinar out of respect for the Royal Family and our National period of mourning.

Speaker, Felicia Schwartz of China Insight Ltd says: “China is a fast-moving, trend intensive cosmetic environment. Although Westerners are equally familiar with influencers, social media and live streaming, research shows that these channels of influence are respectively twice to 3 times more likely to shape consumers’ purchasing choices in China. Some of this has to do with China’s group culture, which makes herd mentality more prevalent, some with its stage of development and consumer maturity where more consumers feel need for guidance and some with the intense competitive environment where looks are considered an asset and despite some relaxation amongst younger generations, strict beauty standards still prevail across the mainstream. A quick look at what key terms are trending on Little Red Book, China’s foremost fashion and beauty app , is instructive in feeling the pulse of the Chinese beauty consumer and will be expanded upon in the upcoming webinar”.

2022 keyword #1: Efficient skincare This is a theme which has been around for a few years now and focuses on product quality and star ingredients. The new twist is an increasing movement away from cumbersome routines to simplified , more minimalistic skincare.

2022 keyword #2: Beauty food Anchored in TCM beliefs that blur the boundaries between nutrition, well-being and beauty, Young consumers now want beauty results through beauty foods like collagen drinks, antiglycation tablets, and anti-melatonin pills.

2022 Keyword #3 : Haute make-up Whilst in previous years there was strong pursuit of specific trending looks ( often coming from Japan like the “easy to marry girl look”), the current trend seeks to enhance the woman’s own traits and complexion , even transforming flaws into unique characteristics.

2022 Keyword #4: Gender neutral Men’s beauty is the fastest growing category in China and is constantly spreading from the niche of “ little fresh meat” influencers to wider segments of society.
