Climate change, sustainability, circular economy, recycling are part of our daily conversations at work and at home. The cosmetics, personal care and beauty industry are uniting and working together as they strive for innovation whilst trying to embed new circular economy models. The industry can be seen collaborating and partnering up as many are making in roads on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations along with net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Kirsty Mawhinney board member of CCCUK who oversees the sustainability pillar for Cosmetics Cluster UK has had a long-standing commitment to sustainability within her field of work. Kirsty's career has allowed her to work with a number of leading natural and organic beauty brands and her consultancy at Skin Insight affords her the platform to work with brands supporting and educating on sustainability initiatives.

In February 2021 Kirsty organised and co-hosted a global virtual event with Professional Beauty - Cosmetics Ingredients, Packaging International and The International Manufacturers Forum.

Several of the sessions were pertaining to sustainability from natural ingredients used in skincare to the validity of sustainable sourcing of these rare and finite natural resources. Green chemistry and new technologies and how to work with bio-fermentation of plant enzymes. Claims and regulations that don’t fall foul of the transparency code. Raising the issue of greenwashing and claims around clean skincare. Packaging innovations and solutions that incorporate the full life cycle of the product from cradle to grave.

Kirsty recently completed the Circular Economy and Sustainability Strategies Course from the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. In June 2021 Kirsty was nominated to be on the advisory committee of The Sustainable Beauty Coalition.

The British Beauty Council launched The Sustainable Beauty Coalition to tackle the global climate change emergency and give consumers what they want. The British Beauty Council formed the Sustainable Beauty Coalition (SBC) to lead in sustainability through championing best practices and industry collaboration. The launch of the coalition is the culmination of a year's work that began with an independent sustainability report commissioned by the British Beauty Council to analyse the beauty sector and the consumers it serves. Called Courage to Change, the report lays out a vision of how we can move forward together to create an industry that nurtures the planet that we love and all that live on it.

Researched and written by social impact consultancy Junxion Strategy and published in November 2020, it included a survey of 3,000 UK consumers by environmental charity Hubbub. The report found that one in seven consumers wanted to buy an environmentally friendly beauty product and highlighted that 88% of people want brands to use less packaging and display clearer information on how to recycle products. The coalition 10-strong steering group is headed by chair Jayn Sterland, UK managing director of green beauty pioneers Weleda.

Jo Chidley who is on the steering committee at SBC of Beauty Kitchen calls on the UK beauty industry to join the Sustainable Beauty Coalition (SBC) and help tackle the climate crisis.

Addressing this forum we will look broadly at biofilm related needs of the industry, companies operating in the supply chain, i.e. manufacturers, formulators, distributors but also consumers and retailers. The talk will focus on biofilms on the human body and on surfaces and on effective, innovative solutions for their detection, management and prevention ranging from surfactant formulations to physical means of biofilm disruption and removal e.g. microbubbles, standardised testing methods and novel design of adhesion-modifying surfaces. We will share a few successful case studies that facilitated new academic research to solve an industry need supported with our Proof of Concept Funding for early commercialisation.
